NEW ORLEANS: Bombs and an ISIS flag were discovered in the truck used during the New Year’s Day terror attack in New Orleans, which claimed 15 lives and injured 33 others. The suspect, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a 42-year-old Army veteran from Texas, bypassed a police blockade on Bourbon Street, plowing into a crowd gathered for holiday celebrations and the Sugar Bowl.
Authorities found firearms and pipe bombs concealed in coolers within the vehicle. These devices were wired for remote detonation, and surveillance footage showed accomplices placing additional explosive devices in the French Quarter. The FBI considers the attack a coordinated act of terrorism.
The truck prominently displayed an ISIS flag, raising concerns about Jabbar’s connections to extremist organizations. The FBI believes Jabbar had assistance and is investigating links to other suspects.
The attack highlights the rising threat of vehicles used as weapons in mass violence, a tactic that remains challenging for law enforcement to counter effectively. New Orleans has since heightened security measures as the investigation unfolds.
