An explosion occurred at a scrap and plastic godowns in Wajid Ali Compound at Kurla locality in Mumbai on Saturday morning, confirmed Fire Brigade. The fire, classified as a level 3 fire, only affected scrap and plastics kept in the godowns. Fortunately there were no casualties involved in the mishap.

The fire started around 6AM and affected a 1000 X 500sq meters area on the ground floor as well as a half completed one- storey building according to the Fire Brigade, which arrived at the Kurla Godowns. It was a severe fire that would need a massive operation to put it out.

Fire fighters mobilized to the scene included eleven fire engines, ten small hose lines, nine jet tanks, aerial work platforms and other specified fire fighting apparatus. Firefighters had engaged themselves in putting off the fire and closed efforts to stop it from enveloping the place. Those godowns on fire had thick smoke emanating from them making it difficult for the fire team to extinguish the fire and cordon off the area.

These loose structures were mostly used for storing of scrap and plastics, which are items well known to accelerate the spread of fire. Cherang’any’s boys are yet to establish the cause of the fire incidents, says the local authorities. The fast action of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, including the fire fighting appliances, also helped in avoiding any deaths or injuries arising from the fire.

The event should also inform us of the dangers of stockpiling combustible products in areas where many people live. They are also supposed to conduct an evaluation that will show whether protection measures in the region were sufficient. Nevertheless, the firefighting prevented loss of life, however, the loss done to propertied by the fire, has not been estimated.
