During India’s second training session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, Rohit Sharma was struck on the left knee while facing throwdown specialist Daya. Rohit continued for a bit but decided to receive attention from the team physiotherapist.
The Indian captain sat in the chair and removed his gear, and the physio took out the ice pack. While applying the pack, pain was visible on the right-handed batsman’s face; later the physio placed Rohit’s left leg on a chair to make him comfortable. Although the blow did not appear to be that serious, the physios are still taking precautions to ensure that any swelling, if any, goes down. There is still some time left for the Boxing Day Test to start, and Rohit is hopeful that the pain will go away.
Akash Deep confirmed in a press conference on the sidelines that the injury was not serious. “Such blows are common when you play cricket. I think this wicket was for a white ball, which is why the ball was staying low. But these blows are common.”
Jasprit Bumrah was at his best against the Indian batter during practice, which was attended by the entire Indian squad. The seamer was blazing fire in the nets, troubling the regular batsmen with sharp angles. Even Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep looked in good form and bowled long spells for the top Indian order with the new ball. Virat Kohli was also present, but he chose to face a lot of sidearmers and then spinners Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja.
On December 26, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s fourth Test gets underway. After the third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw, the five-Test series is now tied at one. Australia won the pink-ball Test at Adelaide Oval by 10 wickets, while India won the first match in Perth by 295 runs.
