The opposition leader in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, minced no words in a biting attack on the Modi-led NDA government, saying Union Home Minister Amit Shah has put a big washing machine to cleanse the image of all those associated with the BJP. Kharge uttered this during a debate over the Constitution in the Upper House today when he said, “Amit Shah has bought a big washing machine. He, she, whichever individual goes in comes out clean. I want to tell all presidential aspirants that there is no need to take revenge if a state or a region did not vote for them.”
Kharge’s comments pointed to his criticism of the BJP’s political operation and discrimination to states according to their vote for the BJP. The Congress president also extended his focus to the ongoing unrest in Manipur, wherein he criticized the government for their dealing with the situation and asked for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in the same troubled state.
“For elections, PM Modi travels around campaigning, but he has never come to Manipur even once. There, Rahul Gandhi went, got out of a yatra, and interacted with the people. There is so much security you have got and yet you are so reluctant to go and sort out that problem. Why?” Kharge posed, reiterating that the ‘clock that needs to be tickled’ is violence in Manipur, not campaigns, where the Prime Minister is.
Kharge also took a shot at the Congress’s recent critics, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He gave one example with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, he said, “On July 3, 1950, Sardar Patel in a letter to Jawaharlal Nehru reiterated that Constitutional amendments were the only way for solving important matters.”
The unleashed invectives were part of his overall attack on the BJP-led government’s functioning, holding it accountable for affirmative action, fair treatment for states, and active measures to address the nation’s problems. His address also intended to draw people’s attention to the outstanding role played by Congress in the formation of India.
