On December 11, 2024, the Ministry of Education will launch the 7th edition of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) at 51 centers across the country. The Smart India Hackathon is a nationwide initiative to provide a platform to students to solve many of the difficult problems they face in their daily lives. SIH helps in developing a culture of product innovation and a problem-solving mindset among the students.

Like previous editions, student teams will either work on problem statements given by ministries/departments/industries or present their idea in the student innovation category against any of the 17 themes. Over 250 problem statements have been filed for SIH 2024 by 54 departments, ministries, PSUs, state governments, and companies.

In SIH 2024, more than 86,000 teams competed at the institution level, and around 49,000 student teams—each with six students and two mentors—were suggested by these institutes to compete at the national level. The difficulties that have been identified and addressed cover 17 key areas or themes that are connected to national priorities and sectors of national importance. These include Emerging Technologies, Water, Agriculture & Food, Heritage & Culture, Smart Technologies, Education & Skill Development, Healthcare, Supply Chain & Logistics, and Disaster Management.

An essential component of SIH’s success is the SIH Alumni Network. The alumni network has highlighted transformative outcomes and successfully documented success stories through its well-designed website (https://alumni.mic.gov.in/). More than 100 startups have been founded by SIH alumni to date, many of which have significant social components.
