Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formalized the expansion of the ministers in his state on Saturday by swearing four of them into the ministry. The oath was taken before Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya in the presence of the party from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), namely Prasanta Phookan, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, and Rupesh Goala. The event was graced by the Chief Minister and other members of the state cabinet as well.

The new minister who took oath multiple times MLA elected Phasanta Phookan, also has vast experience of being four times MLA from the Dibrugarh constituency. Krishnendu Paul, who won the Patharkandi seat twice as an MLA, is also a veteran in politics. Kaushik Rai belongs to Lakhipur, and Rupesh Goala belongs to Doom Dooma. Both are first-time MLAs. Phookan and Goala are from the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts, which fall under the Upper Assam tea area; the Paul and Rai tribes of Sribhumi (formerly Karimganj) and Cachar are from the Barak Valley.

The induction of these four leaders indicates certainly a huge addition to Sarma’s leadership team as the state progresses with the 19-member council of ministers. As such, the new ministers are supposed to advance the government’s program and respond to the issues in their regions.

As for the ministerial positions, the government was keen on maintaining representation from all regions of the state, the tea belt and the Barak Valley both in the presented list of ministers: Phookan, Paul, Rai and Goala.

Chief Minister Sarma, having more leaders in his team, is likely to enhance the government’s efforts in the regions, development, and governance, as well as the main challenges that impact different areas of Assam. The expansion of the cabinet has come at the right time as the state focuses on the next possible challenges and remarkable achievements.
