Hemant Soren has become the 14th CM of Jharkhand; he was sworn in at a ceremony at Ranchi’s Morabadi Ground on Thursday. A large number of political leaders attended the ceremony to witness the swearing-in: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, among others. During the event, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar took the oath of office and secrecy of Soren.
This gives the 49-year-old Jharkhand Mukti Morra (JMM) leader his fourth tenure as Chief Minister. Soren recently won the Barhait seat assembly elections after recording 39,791 votes against Gamliyel Hembrom of the BJP. The JMM coalition won 56 out of 81 assembly seats in Jharkhand, while the BJP’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) got only 24 seats out of 81.
Opposition leaders most present throughout the ceremony and flew to the event included Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Other prominent leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, Mehbooba Mufti, Uddhav Thackeray and Tejashwi Yadav were also present, which indicated opposition.
To avoid any inconveniences, enhanced security measures were put in place, including traffic being diverted throughout Ranchi and schools being closed in the city. Posters flooded the streets in regards to the event and Soren had made the effort to visit the venue the day before, going around with other officials.
Hemant Soren has already sworn in alone this time; the rest of his ministers are to be administered shortly after a trust vote on the house floor. Asked about the cabinet formation process, Jharkhand Congress in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir said: “We will sit together in the next couple of days to finalize the list.”
