Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially entered parliamentary politics on Thursday, November 28, when she was sworn in as Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha. Besides her, the party chief Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan was also sworn into office. This is the first time in decades that all three Nehru-Gandhi family members are now MPs in Parliament, namely Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi.
Flanked by her mother, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi came to parliament for the same event. Congress MP, her brother Rahul Gandhi, and her husband Robert Vadra also joined to come and show support for her in this important event.
Recently, in the bypolls, Priyanka Gandhi secured her Lok Sabha seat in Wayanad with a thumping majority by a margin of 4,10,931 votes. These bypolls were held simultaneously with assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. This win has given the Congress party even more of a foothold in the region, as Wayanad has recently been the stronghold of the Gandhis.
The Wayanad bypoll was earlier necessitated after Rahul Gandhi gave up the seat mid this year. Rahul Gandhi had fought and secured victory in two seats of Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the April 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He later on opted to continue serving the Rae Bareli parliamentary seat, a family stronghold that informed a by-election for Wayanad.
Priyanka Gandhi’s first election is thereby considered a major boost for the INC as her presence in the parliament is obviously going to bolster the party’s capacity and range in terms of management and communication. Her appearance with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi shows the new phase of the Nehru-Gandhi family in the Indian political arena.
