On Wednesday, Chief Minister Atishi expressed deep concerns over the “worsening” law and order situation in Delhi, threatening the safety of the public, which she claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been unable to cure. She referred to Delhi as the ‘gangster capital’ where criminals, extortionists and goons seem to run free in the national capital.

Her remarks came into the backdrop of her visit to the parents of a 28-year-old man who was killed in Sunder Nagri, northeast Delhi, last week. The victim is alleged to have been stabbed in the neck by two brothers after he and his relative confronted them over evil deeds to a woman. The reported event occurred on a Friday night and has angered many people. The police arrested the accused of the incident.

Atishi also said that a compensation ₹10 lakh would be paid to the family members of the deceased, confessing that the family has suffered a huge loss. While addressing the media, she criticized the Home Minister, who has his operation centre in Delhi, where law and order are part of his portfolio.

‘Delhi has become a ‘gangster capital.’ The criminals have gained the confidence to shoot stab, or kill anyone because they will not be arrested or charged. The police appear useless, and the masses are slowly turning away from any form of justice,” she posted.

Continuing the attack on Shah, Atishi said that he was busy with his election campaign and did not care for the safety of the Delhi people. But in the capital, murders, extortion and all types of criminal activities are taking place on a daily basis, and the Home Minister has no concern about the suffering of the people she claimed.

The event has been criticised for raising again the question concerning the policing of law and order in Delhi and renewed concern with the role of the central government. The comments by Atishi demonstrate that citizens are getting impatient with repeat offences of violent crimes and the seeming inaction by state power.
