The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is choosing not to comment on the violence that happened last week in Manipur and the growing demand for leadership change.
Manipur has continued the ethnic unrest since May 2023, specifically between Meitei & Kuki. Now, violence is increasing day by day. Nevertheless, the pressure that senior BJP leaders have realized has suggested that the BJP and the Union government are keen on bringing harmony to the region and there is no hint of any leadership change in the BJP.
Some officials of the party, who insisted on remaining anonymous, have confirmed that the situation in Manipur is not that easy. This ethnic animosity between the Meitei and Kuki has reached a stage that Dolan will only be making the situation worse if he appointed a new chief minister from either party.
‘The friction has got worse and anybody from that particular ethnic group will be deemed as unwelcome by the other,’ they said. Some people believe that a new chief minister who is not supported by most of the population could only deepen the divide and make the situation worse instead of stabilizing it.
Regarding the issue of possibly exercising executive privilege or placing the state under President’s Rule that a non-derivative head of the state government is selected, the party leader pointed out that it would be the purview of the central administration. It would depend on the security situation of the state and the circumstances which prevail at that particular time.
Adding another twist to the story, the National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, pulled out of support to the BJP-led government in Manipur on Sunday. Sangma also noted that the withdrawal was also tied to the leadership of Chief Minister Biren Singh. He pointed out that for the NPP to turn around and start collaborating for the peace to be restored, another change of leadership, coupled with an effective strategy, would pave the way for that.
