Sources on Monday revealed that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun formally investigating three important cases related to what some have described as the increasing violence in Manipur recently. This was done after the Union home ministry, which has been closely observing the situation in the area, came up with the move.
The move by the government to seek the assistance of the NIA is a result of recent acts of violence that have been observed in Manipur in the recent past weeks. The state government has forwarded the case files coming under the Jiribam incident to the NIA, which has re-filed FIRs under various provisions of the IPC, Arms Act, and UAPA Act.
The first case focuses on the sadistic killing of a Hmar woman from Jairolpokpi (Zairawn) of Jiribam district on 7th November. According to locals, armed men raided her home at around 9 p.m. and shot her dead before torching the house. This heinous act has only fueled the fire in the region. In addition to that, currently, there are missing reports of six members of a Meitei family belonging to the same village, three women and three children. Officials believe that some rebels kidnaped them. Unfortunately, on Friday, the skeletal remains of two little children and one woman in consonance with, including an infant, were found near the Manipur-Assam border, which added to the tension.
The second case relates to an attack on the CRPF post at Jakuradhor Karong on 11th November. It sparked violence and new concern for the safety of the security personnel in the region.
The third incident occurred on November 11 when gunmen attacked the Borobekra police station and other houses. The armed miscreants opened fire on the station and several houses and burnt some houses and shops, creating a lot of panic.
