The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Kolkata, led by its Zonal Officer, T. Kirakant, on the 13th of November, 2024, arrested a dangerous drug peddler, Gautam Mondal, who was under our surveillance for smuggling 15000 bottles of Codeine-Based Cough Syrups (CBCS).
Mondal is wanted for the smuggling of gold and was taken into custody after police raided her hideout as part of a major crackdown against the drug trafficking CBCS intended for Bangladesh. The operation, one of the most difficult intercepts in recent years, involved the confiscation of 14998 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup brand that had been smuggled and were trying to be sold in Uttar Pradesh without passing through the legal channels.
Mondal, the main accused of the international drug peddlers racket, has been involved in several gold smuggling cases also. They have identified him as an accused in at least three gold smuggling rackets running into crores of rupees being probed by the DRI, say NCB officials. He had a role to play in trafficking the CBCS syrups, which were routed through West Bengal and meant for clandestine sale in Bangladesh.
The NCB labeled Mondal as a hardcore offender who used a layering technique in managing his illicit business. He taught several operatives to perform routine tasks in twos, shifting around often to confuse police agencies. This operational modus operandi often frustrated anyone who had to attempt tracking and dismantling his work.
The arrest of Gautam Mondal is a major setback to the drug trafficking organization that he had been running from the top. The NCB has said it will conduct further raids targeting his associates and extend support from DRI Kolkata and STF West Bengal to completely bust the drug ring. More joint interrogations have yet to be conducted in an effort to completely dismantle this criminal structure.
