The Delhi LG VK Saxena has asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to launch a one-month special operation to identify those unauthorized travelers in the capital and cordon with the central departments to take necessary actions.
The directive also specifically expands the alertness of civil organizations, including the MCD, NDMC, and the CSO, to offer due prevention against fake citizenship/voter identity cards forged by illegal immigrants in Delhi.
The decision comes at a time when the city is heading for the assembly elections next February. Police said that senior BJP leaders have alleged that the AAP government in Delhi has been supporting the Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants who are staying in the country illegally, an issue that is likely to gather political mileage during polls.
Laying out facts in a letter to top officials, beginning with the Chief Secretary, Police Commissioner, and head of all civic Bodies, Saxena states, ‘Many sordid tales have inundated my office through social networking sites and from other reliable sources, and it is quite shocking that Delhi has become a hotbed of Illegal immigrants’. They are allegedly invading roads, footpaths, and parks and even trying to get Aadhaar and Election Identity Cards by foul means.
Saxena highlighted that a threat to national security is if illegal foreigners in a given country are able to secure voter ID cards; they are granted the sovereignty of this right—voting—the most potent democratic right. He said that such actions are wrong and could be counterproductive for the stability of the nation.
The LG asked the Divisional Commissioner to order District Magistrates to be very careful during identity document verification. The SCT alone does not perform inspections; instead, it is Delhi Police that has been assigned this responsibility, and part of this duty is directed towards people who encroach on public roads and or government land. Saxena also called on all the departments of the government to implement the Supreme Court ruling that prohibits the inheritance of public land by individuals who had no legal right to own the land in the first place throughout the city.
