The USGS reported an earthquake with a strength of 6.7 on the Richter scale occurred off the south coast of Papua New Guinea. It has a depth of 51 kilometres and lies roughly 123.2 kilometres off the town of Kokopo Hofund.

After the earthquake, the Papua New Guinea National Disaster Centre said it was surveying to establish if there were any infrastructural losses. Thus, none of them were followed by tsunami warnings and other immediate issues related to the broad coastal consequences.

Well, Papua New Guinea is not new to earthquakes, seeing that the country goes through a lot of them throughout the year. This country is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is a region of tectonic activity, annual seismic activity and volcanic eruptions. This arc runs through Southeast Asia and the Pacific, which are among the most active seismic zones in the whole world.

Most of the earthquakes Papua New Guinea experiences occur in this region; however, they differ in their effect depending on civilization density. The fact that many areas of the country are geographically disadvantaged and inhabited by a small number of people helps alleviate extensive devastation. Still, they can cause landslides, which are very dangerous for the territories that became their victim.

People in the region have been urged to keep waiting and be cautious as authorities continue to observe the phenomenon. The earthquake also emphasizes to guests that the area is geologically dangerous despite the fact that people live in such a zone. Mitigation measures that include evaluation of possible damage by the disaster management bodies will help to reduce the impact of the quake on the societies.

These earthquakes in this region of the world lay bare the need for disaster preparedness in an area such as Papua New Guinea. Although a recent quake has created panic, the lack of tsunami dangers is a relief to residents and authorities.
