A doctor was assailed after a man grew furious over the pregnancy complications that his mother had in a government hospital in Chennai on Wednesday.
The attack was on Dr. Balaji Jaganathan a specialist in oncology of the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Guindy. The attacker, having a knife, stabbed the doctor in the neck and chest, which required the doctor to be on a critical list. Dr. Jaganathan was quickly transferred to the ICU where he is admitted for intensive treatment.
Three other people were with the suspect as he went to the hospital intending to seek an outpatient service. After entering Jaganathan’s room, the man produced a knife and, having assaulted the doctor once attacked him again. Hospital employees immediately restrained the aggressor, and he was turned over to the police afterward.
The police claimed that the man acted as a result of his anger due to his mother’s state when receiving treatment. Emerging from the investigation, it was established that the suspect and his friends had a recent scuffle with the hospital personnel over alleged negligence.
Tamil Nadu state’s Head of Government, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, condemned the violence, showing his concern by saying he was deeply shocked by the incident. He further said that the government would ensure that Dr.Jaganathan is treated with all necessary medical attention.
On social media, Stalin outlined the value of government doctors, saying that their service was priceless. He also said he would do everything to protect healthcare workers and ensure that such occurrences do not happen again in the future. The authorities have ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the occurrence.
