On Wednesday morning, Kyiv was shaken by loud explosions as Russia began to strike the Ukrainian capital with missiles for the first time since August.
According to the Ukrainian military, tactical bombers and ballistic missiles were used in the attack. The magnitude of the attack and the amount of loss are still under questioning, but there have not been any victims recorded yet. As of now, Ukrainian authorities have urged people to stay indoors and be careful because the air defense forces are working on addressing the threat.
The missile strike came after a drone attack that has been persistent in Kyiv, with Russian drones attacking the city virtually every night in the last couple of weeks. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said that a drone was flying over central Kyiv at the time of the missile strike, meaning the threat to the city remains high. He said that the Kyiv city administration informed citizens of the explosions taking place in the city and claimed that people should remain in shelters since air defense systems operate with the targets.
There has been tension in the air in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv for several months, as people were expecting a massive missile attack that could hit the city’s already vulnerable power supply. As expected, a missile strike on key energy infrastructure is possible as the weather gets colder since the resulting power outages would significantly affect millions of Ukrainians.
Day-to-day drone onslaughts have tired most people in Kyiv and are currently taking refuge in subway stations. About one hundred individuals, including families with children who covered their faces with blankets and the elderly who were lying on folded chairs, stayed at the Universitet metro station. If the worst does not happen, people persistently suffer, and the conditions associated with living in a city are under threat of aerial attack.
