The BJP in Assam has intensified its campaign for by-elections to five assembly seats even as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is in Jharkhand to spend more time on election work.
However, the state BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita dismisses Sarma’s absence, saying that it has not affected the party’s preparation for the assembly polls in Jharkhand nor in the BJP-ruled Assam. Twelve senior ministers, two each from the state assembly and other senior party workers, have been given the responsibility of each constituency for the close connection with the voters and proper running of the campaign.
Sarma is the BJP co-in-charge for the 81-Seat Jharkhand assembly polls and has been working overtime to topple the Hemant Soren-led JMM-Congress- RJD alliance government. Speaking in a recent press conference in Guwahati, he described the Jharkhand election as tough and said, he may not be able to spend much of his time in Assam for campaigning.
But according to Kalita, Sarma will tour Assam for the next three days from Tuesday to boost the party’s prospects prior to the November 13 by-elections for the Behali, Bongaigaon, Dholai, Sidli, and Samaguri constituencies.
The five seats under reference fell vacant as the sitting MLAs were nominated for the Lok Sabha in the initial months of this year. Mehboob recently, in an interview, expressed satisfaction over the performance of the government in Jammu and Kashmir. Out of these four, the BJP is eyeing to win four out of which three are being held by the BJP and its allies-Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
Samaguri, the fifth seat, was held by the Congress earlier. Concerning Behali, Bongaigaon, Dholai & Sidli seats, Kalita affirmed that, as BJP, they are very confident of clinching all these 4 seats. At the same time, Samaguri expects a little more challenge based on its population size, but they agreed that should be able to clinch the seat.
The results of these by-elections will take into account their final decisions on November 23rd.
