In Bangladesh, tens of thousands of Hindus have come together in a rally held on Friday to seek protection against the increase in violence and threatening behaviours towards the minority Hindu population in Bangladesh, which they want the interim government to address.
Around 30000 people participated in the rally, held in a busy signal of Chattogram, where people shouted slogans claiming their rights. It happened in front of the police and soldiers, and other protests were noted across different regions of the country.
While Hindu organizations have insisted there have been over 2000 attacks on their people since early August. This rise in violence incurred political instability that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina out of the country during the student movement.
After such a change of guard, Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel prize winner who was appointed to lead the interim government, has said that the atrocities committed against Hindus have been grossly exaggerated.
Currently, Bangladesh has about 168 million population and Hindus are minorities, covering nearly 8 percent of this population, while Muslims are about 91 percent. Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council said there were over 2,000 attacks on Hindus, especially after August 4, which has shown the increasing difficulties of the interim government in trying to regain law and order.
Similarly, interest in human rights in Bangladesh has also elicited interest from outside observers. Secretary-General of the United Nations and all human rights organization have raised concerns about minority people during the era of Yunus.
Some Hindus and other minorities claim the interim Government has not offered sufficient security to prevent uncompromising Islamic parties from assuming rising power after Hasina’s ousting.
The situation has attracted concern in the country, with the leader of India, Narendra Modi, voicing his concern on the reports of the persecution of the minorities. Also, the biography of the new U.S. President, Joe Biden, shows that the new administration is paying close attention to the matters of human rights in the country.
