In parts of Jharkhand, there was an earthquake of 3.6 Richter scale as reported in the official press on Saturday morning.
The tremor occurred at approximately 9:20 A.M., with the main shock occurring in Khunti district, some 35 km away from Ranchi, the state capital. Senior meteorologist Upendra Shrivastava told PTI that the earthquake took place at 5 kms depth.
Luckily, no human losses or loss of property have been reported yet in relation to the quake, which means that the effect of the quake was modest. But people in different districts like Seraikela-Kharsawan of West Bengal and Jharkhand, including Jamshedpur and Kandra, said that they felt the tremor which compelled some of them to shift out of their homes for some time.
The information about the earthquake and its impact has been officially given by the National Center for Seismology, and the authority assured that such disasters though having a shocking impact, are common in the area. Jharkhand is situated in a seismically sensitive region; thus, it is vulnerable to minor to moderate earthquakes. The affected authorities are closely observing the situation, and people are advised to stay calm and alert for more possible earthquakes.
Since the disaster, those in leadership have sought to provide a word of encouragement that response formations have been put on standby for any complications marked by quake like incidents. At the end of the programme, members of the community are urged to follow official communications and to report any suspicious events to the authorities.
In anticipation of foreseeable earthquakes, the public is advised to have a physical emergency response prepared and know the dos and don’ts when disaster strikes, such as dropping to the ground, taking cover under a table and holding onto it until the shaking is no longer felt. The latest earthquake is enough to remind us of how important it is to have a strategy in case of such events.
