On Monday, the Union government told the country’s top court that the committee appointed to look into the alleged illegality in NEET-UG 2024 is to submit its report and action-taken report. The government’s counsel, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, told the bench headed by CJI Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud that the committee’s report is ready. Still, more time is required for it to be finalized and submitted. Arising from the bench, which comprised Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, the AIMPLB was directed to submit two weeks for the Centre to present the report to the court formally.
Earlier, the government had sought three weeks, as requested by the parliamentary committee, which affected the deadline from September 30 to October 21, allowing the committee to compile and submit the details as per the court direction earlier given. The committee, which plans to present structural reforms for all central board exams, held 22 sittings to deliberate on the challenges that arise while handling such central board examinations and the security issues and risks associated with them.
This involved soliciting responses on the MyGov Portal, which attracted responses totalling over 37,000 comprised of student, guardian, and education specialists, besides consultations with state governments, police authorities, regulating bodies and International test specialists. This was encouraged by many anomalies reported during the NEET-UG 2024 exam conducted by the National Testing Agency from the 4,750 centres in 571 cities involving more than 2,300,000 candidates competing for not more than 108,000 available seats.
Before, the Supreme Court publicly rebuked the NTA for the NEET-UG examination, saying that although it may not be completely rigged, serious negligence raises questions about its impartiality and accuracy. Shortly after dismissing several petitions demanding a NEET-UG retest, the court gave a detailed judgment on August 2, and suggested multiple structural changes.
