New Delhi: Delhi Police have reached out to social media platforms, including X, seeking information about accounts posting fake bomb threats that have disrupted multiple domestic and international flights this week. This week alone, more than 70 domestic and international flights have been reported to receive bomb threats.
It has been a week of disruption for the Indian aviation sector following a wave of hoax bomb threats targeting multiple airlines. At least 19 such threats were issued by a 17-year-old tech-savvy boy from Chhattisgarh who wanted to take revenge on his 25-year-old business partner over a financial dispute that spiralled into accusations of harassment and sexual misconduct.
According to the minor’s mother, her son had borrowed Rs 3–5 lakh from his friend with whom he co-owned a mobile shop in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon. Their partnership soon turned sour due to alleged mental harassment and a sexual assault incident, she said.
Further, the police intensified their probe on Saturday after registering an FIR in connection with the bomb threat to Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight carrying 180 people. Officials have also launched a probe in several other similar cases reported at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport this month.
A dedicated team has been formed to investigate these bomb threat cases, with the cyber cell of Delhi police and Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations (IFSO) also joining the probe. Police suspect that the perpetrator used a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or dark web browser to set up multiple accounts and post threatening messages.
