Burhanpur: In Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, municipal employees have come out on the street protesting mostly because they have not been paid their salaries for the last four months. They have camped at the municipal corporation office due to their frustrations with the current state in which they have found themselves. The employees are disappointed about the failure to be awarded a public double holiday during the show, which included Valmiki Jayanti; the public and state also celebrate it.
In the course of the protest, they chanted foul mouth against the Municipal Commissioner and the Mayor of the area. They contended that whereas Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated as a national and state-wide function, they are denied permission to attend religious functions. They also complained that abusive language was used over the wireless communication when the request for leave was made by some employees, which added to the matter.
On Friday, the groups of municipal workers protested at the corporation office of the main offenders and threatened to dismiss the officers in question. The employees were on the same ultimatum, saying that it was wrong to deny them wages for such a long period, adding that Diwali is around the corner.
The organizations protesting employees have given a very serious warning that if similarly, they have not received their four-month salary here during the Diwali festival, then from Tuesday, they will go on an indefinite hunger strike. The employees stressed that all the repercussions from the hunger strike will be on the administration and government’s side.
This protest shows the increasing violations of the rights of municipal workers who complain of late payments and unfair treatment, especially during this festive season when costs are high and religious observing is important. The situation is piling up as the employees intensify, preparing to have their demands resolved as soon as possible.
