As a result of the intense rainfall that has caused flooded conditions in several parts of Bengaluru, the Karnataka government suspended all schools and colleges in the city on Wednesday. Bengaluru Urban District Collector Jagadeesha made this statement on Tuesday evening due to the anticipated continued rainfall for the next few days.
According to IMD, there are orange alarms for tomorrow in Bengaluru, and people can expect substantial rainfall. This announcement was made when schools were recently reopened after the Dasara holidays. To counter this, some teachers have been forced to teach higher classes online so that learning is not interrupted due to the harsh weather prevailing at the split moment. For instance, Thursday already has a public holiday as a reminder of Valmiki Jayanti.
The local government of Bengaluru, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), took to social media on Tuesday to assure residents that a flood management team is working on this and is always on standby in case the community needs them. In their warning, BBMP identified the parts of the town that received a continuous downpour throughout the day today and informed the public that a possibility of more rain remains open until 8 AM on October 16, 2024. They said they have working flood management systems and are attending to the affected areas as a civic body.
BBMP also appealed to its citizens to go outside only when one has to and to be very careful even while doing so. Tuesday saw rainfall in the Yelahanka Zone, and Chowdeswari Nagar was subject to 73.5 mm of it. Heavy rainfall measuring 65.5 mm was received in the Jakkur area as well. And while the city experiences these weather challenges, things remain as operationalised and depersonalised as ever when it comes to matters of life and death; institutions and people try to mitigate the effects of the heavy rains.
