New Delhi: The Delhi government has outlawed using all kinds of firecrackers to check air pollution that peaks in the city during the winter season. Under this prohibition, the manufacture, storage, and sale of firecrackers, including those through e-commerce platforms, will remain prohibited until January 1, 2025. The order was given by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, which falls under the environment department and calls for its strict compliance by the Delhi police. Government agencies involved have been ordered to submit reports on measures that are being taken to enforce this ban on a daily basis.
This measure is part of a detailed strategy described in the Delhi government’s Winter Action Plan for 2024, which addresses air quality degradation phenomena that are most pronounced in the colder period. The restriction on the use of firecrackers is considered important, especially during festival season when the utilization of fireworks increases the air pollution level.
A remarkable undertaking of the Delhi government in the fight against air pollution is that its authorities plan to use drones for air quality monitoring in real-time throughout several critical areas of the city. This is the first time drones will be employed for such a statement, but they will help collect important information on pollution levels and provide more specific reactions to them. This also enlists measures needed to regulate other pollution sources, including vehicle emissions, dust, stubble burning, and industrial effluents. In addition, there are rumours about working from home in civil servants and the public sector, plans for implementing odd-even number plates for cars, and even considerations of artificial rain as a solution to pollution.
Delhi’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai underlined the need for cooperation with other states regarding the cross-state pollution problem, including the serious problem of burning crop residue in neighbouring regions.
