Currently, Nepal and Sri Lanka are negotiating with New Delhi regarding adopting India’s project planning tool, PM GatiShakti, so that the time and expenses required for infrastructure projects can be minimized. The existence of this development was corroborated by the Industry Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia, adding that the system has emerged to help approve infrastructure projects worth over ₹15 lakh crore in the last three years of the system’s operation. “The proposals are under consideration,” Bhatia observed, further pointing out that Nepal focuses on certain schemes while Sri Lanka intends to integrate the PM GatiShakti into its entire infrastructure management.
Introduced by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on October 13, 2021, the PM GatiShakti, commonly termed the ‘National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity’, seeks to bring efficiency into the planned projects through an innovation gamut of digital tools. Echoing Bhatia’s comment, the Indian minister stressed that his country is willing to assist its neighbours in improving the outcomes of their infrastructure projects, and such help will be additional.
Apart from mega projects at central and state levels, India will also implement PM GatiShakti right down to the district-level planning. The tool has been applied to 208 projects worth of ₹15.39 lakh crore in the last three years. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has reported that 36 states and UTs are now using the system.
Currently, 44 central ministries have included PM GatiShakti as a tool for their integrated planning requirements. These are as follows: eight infrastructure ministries, sixteen social sector ministries, fifteen economic ministries, and five other major departments. In addition, 1,614 data layers have been integrated into the system, out of which 726 are input from ministries and departments, 888 from states and UTs. Through these partnerships, planning, implementing, and monitoring large infrastructure development projects within the country has become easier.
