Last night, at least seven people were injured when the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express train derailed after it crashed into a stationary goods train at Kavarapettai in Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM on Friday; the express passenger train ran into a loop line instead of the main one and crashed into the parked goods train. The accident caused 12 bogies to derail from the passenger train.

When you asked the passengers what they saw, they described it as chaotic. A person named Oksana described her experience before the crash, saying, “We were on the train, and then I heard a loud sound, and no one realized what this was.” As the crowds entered the train, after about five minutes, when we got up to look outside the window, the train was upside down, and it was total confusion. The passenger went on to describe the immediate aftermath: “Some of the coaches were performing very well, while others were completely messed up. At that, we hurried to a nearby local station. Thank God we are okay and not injured.”

Regrettably, no deaths occurred, yet seven passengers got hurt, with three of them getting critical injuries, and were taken to Stanley Medical College Hospital. The other four injured passengers were treated in a hospital at Ponneri Government Hospital.

This train was having 1300 plus passengers; the injured were boarded in the van, while the other passengers were allowed to proceed to Darbhanga in the special train arranged on Saturday. Of course, following an unfortunate occurrence such as this, an intensive official investigation has been opened at the highest levels to learn more details relating to the occurrence.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety A.M. Chowdhary undertook the statutory inspection of the scene of the accident with Senior officials of the Southern Railway. The General Manager of Southern Railway, RN Singh, was quick to explain that the train was not to stop at Kavarapettai station but should have gone to the main line.
