After the Congress party rejected the defeat in the October 5 Haryana assembly election on grounds of allegedly rigged vote counting, it wanted to meet the chiefs of the Election Commission of India. The meeting will take place on Wednesday at 6 PM at the Commission’s office. This was announced by the Election Commission to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

The letter arrived after Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera described the election outcomes as ‘unacceptable’ on 8th October. These statements were labeled as ‘unprecedented’ by the principal secretary NT Bhutia of the Election Commission when he described them as an ‘undemocratic rejection of the people’s will.’ The Commission observed that it had received information and comments from some Congress members, including Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, who said the election result was a surprise.

The Election Commission, in its letter, accepted the receipt of the communication about a proposal to meet a 12-member official Congress delegation that included those who made such objectionable remarks. This dialogue will attempt to serve the purpose of creating an open platform for the Congress party to express concerns about this electoral process in Haryana.

The election results have created confusion, and Congress complains of some vices that they believe derailed the elections. That is why, convening this meeting, the Election Commission intends to protect the legitimate interests of the electoral process, responding at the same time to the statements of the party. Given the current trends in the political environment, it is very possible that this meeting may represent a critical point in the Congress party’s strategic planning and might likely affect the existing attitude towards the election process. The Election Commission is actually not vindictive and merely wants to apply the democratic setting in which all parties must be given an equal chance to air their grievances.
