On Tuesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) dismissed the Congress party’s allegations of any imbalance in updating the election trends for the Haryana assembly elections. The ECI argued that such attempts were made with the objective of “back-door endorsement of recklessly, maliciously and scandalously unsubstantiated falsehoods.”
The Congress had filed a complaint alleging that the updates to the ECI website were “inordinate and unacceptable”, and they pointed to slower results as a major issue. However, the ECI countered that it had not received any such evidence regarding these allegations and pointed out that, in Ramesh’s memorandum, there are no cases in point of the alleged slow pace of identity certification in certain regions.
The ECI described the concerns in the same vein as what the Congress raised during the national elections that were conducted on 4th June, mentioning that the counting process was done in the presence of candidate observers and micro observers. They pointed out that according to their observation, about 25 rounds of counting in all the constituencies were being uploaded every five minutes.
The ECI’s reply came in amid indications that the BJP was headed for a third straight victory in Haryana, which was against the backdrop of polls predicting Congress’ imminent victory. The delays could be exploited by “bad faith actors” to create false meta-narratives, which was the reason the formal complaint was filed with the CEC Rajiv Kumar and officials, Ramesh said. He said this could affect ongoing counting processes. He asked the ECI to immediately issue directives to tasked agencies for timely updates of accurate figures to observe the tidal wave of fake news on various social media platforms.
