Mumbai: Philip Hitesh Shah a 52-year-old businessman, committed suicide by falling from the Atal Setu, which is part of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), in the early hours of Wednesday. This is the second suicide at the same bridge within the space of two days, after a deputy manager at a nationalized bank committed suicide by jumping from the same bridge earlier in the week. His lifeless body was recovered from a seashore in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, the police added.
Philip Shah, a Matunga resident who stayed with his family, has been suffering from depression for the past few months, his family said. They fear that mental illness is what pushed him to commit suicide. As per a police source, Shah had revved his sedan on the Atal Setu bridge and, after that, got out of the car to commit suicide by jumping into the sea.
It was discovered by CCTV operators of the bridge who realized that the car was parked suspiciously. It was also possible to send an airsoft team to the place immediately. However, the emergency service arrived soon, and although they searched only for a few minutes, they found Shah’s body. They were rushed to the nearest hospital, after which he was declared dead on arrival.
The car belonged to Philip Shah, who was traced through an Aadhaar card retrieved from his vehicle, which was parked along the street. There was no suicide note, but the family and the police believe that he felt the mental stress in recent days contributed to the tragedy. His death is still shocking the community, and people are raising issues of mental health issues all over.
The incidents like the following one happen on the Atal Setu bridge, which has become a cause of concern regarding safety and various mental issues faced by people. The authorities are now calling on patients to seek help and support.
