On 22 September, security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Left-wing insurgency-affected region Abhujmad got inputs about the presence of three most-wanted Maoist commanders, for whom the rewards on their head are ₹25 lakh, ₹16 lakh, and ₹8 lakh, respectively. It was not explored until this time of the British era because of the region’s thick forests and complex topography, and the forces saw a challenge. However, these challenges were overcome, and the security teams carried out a mission, which was a 15-and-a-half-hour’ hike, before the Maoist rebels were neutralized on the night of September 23.

The operation, also termed ‘Maad Bachao’ (meaning ‘Save Abhujmad’), was not merely a mere operational exercise but was directed to blind the Maoist propaganda groups or the ‘Maad Bachao Manch’ from saving Abhujmad. This has been accused of supporting Maoists by helping the latter in protests against operations against them and supplying assistance to the rebels.

Other members of the security forces, together with the Border Security Force (BSF), fired at the Maoists in an isolated area of Abhujmad, close to the Maharashtra state border. This call was held between September 22 and 26 and led to the killings of the three prominent Maoist commanders who were originally from Gadhchiroli in Maharashtra. The Officer commanding the operation of the BSF said that the forces moved for 16 hours on foot, traversing through all kinds of terrains to eliminate the insurgents’ domination zone, indicating the extent to which security forces are escalating the tension.

At least 37 Maoists have been killed this year in the Narayanpur district and 157 across Chhattisgarh. The intensified Chief operations are also part of a broader plan of the Union government to purge Left-wing insurgency in the country by the close of March 2026.
