In Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, a nurse was accused by the family that their newborn died because she refused to attend to him because they were asked to provide money. The sad event took place at the Community Health Center (CHC) in Karhal on September 19, after the mother, Sanjali, had delivered a healthy baby boy. The father, Sujit Kumar, said that the nurse on duty, identified as Jyoti, asked for ₹5,100 before releasing the baby to them. If the family failed to pay the cash, the nurse reportedly laid the baby on a table, and she declined to hand him to the family as they persisted in begging for it.
The family aver that the delay in delivering the baby, which lasted for 40 minutes, put the child at risk. Even when Sujit could have raised the demanded amount, the condition of the baby had already worsened. Sujit reported the ritual to the hospital authorities, who contacted the Medical College of Saifai to treat the newborn. But, to our surprise, the baby died just after being taken to the hospital. There, they said that due to inadequate birth process upbringing, the infant died.
After the family filed a complaint, the CMO of Mainpuri, Dr RC Gupta, said that a probe had indeed been opened. The CMO said he set up a three-person committee to investigate the matter, which is supposed to submit its report within three days. But in order to get an impartial investigation of the incident, nurse Jyoti has been transferred to another health center. The family is demanding justice for the terrible event itself, and the state government has been informed of this.
Various parties have reiterated that stringent measures should be employed in hospitals after this case has brought into light possibilities of malpractices in the health sector.
