In a public meeting in Bahadurgarh, Haryana Congress MP Rahul Gandhi came down heavily on its Prime Minister Narendra Modi for framing the economic structure to benefit a particular select set of industrialists. Taking on the example of the recently held grand wedding ceremony of Anant Ambani, son of industrialist Mukesh Ambani, Rahul Gandhi asked where such fortunes come from. Have you watched Ambani’s wedding? He spent crores on it. Whose money is this? It is your money,” he said, though it can be difficult for middle-class peasants to take up bank loans to dole out their children’s wedding expenses, more so if one wants to throw a grand party under the current financial system that only certain elites can afford.

Rahul Gandhi levelled several charges against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including that his government built an economic system for about 25 people and that farmers and the middle class are being forced into debt. “A farmer can only organise a wedding by plunging into more debt. If this is not an attack on the Constitution, I would like to know what it is.” Gandhi said more, stressing the increasing levels of inequality between the rich and the poor within the country.

He also condemned the recent central government policy called the ‘Agniveer scheme’ to bar Indian soldiers and their families from pensions, canteen services and the status of a martyr. They next characterised the Agniveer scheme, saying that it was merely a ploy to take back some of the benefits from soldiers. ‘This government has been obsessed with privatising everything – including the defence sector – to favour corporations such as Adani Defence,” he said. Recalling his previous statements, he said, Once again, the Congress party opposes the Agniveer system, and if we come to power at the Centre, we will withdraw this scheme.

While addressing a rally in Sonipat, Rahul Gandhi did not spare Modi’s poll payout on cutting the prices of gas cylinders. He said the Congress would give ₹2,000 per month to women of Haryana in order to help ease household expenses.
