Raipur: Today, the students of class 10 from Prayas Residential School of SHaddu Raipur brought out a march towards the Legislative Assembly, protesting the continued failure to address their problems. The students’ protests have been very severe as they have accused the school’s administrative officer Manjula Tiwari, and principal, Pramila Shukla, of threatening and even outraging the students.

The students think that Chaukhamb, an institute, has been established at the school to prepare students for clear competitive examinations like JEE. Regardless, the students mention that they joined Prayas only for better preparations for the JEE exam, but they are not given study materials, books or proper guidance. Therefore, the pass-outs from the Prayas really have seen a reduction in the number of students getting through the JEE in the last few years.

The students went further to complain that smart class projectors have been fixed in classrooms with no working one in most of them. This hostel, accommodating 350 students, only has 12 baths and toilets, out of which only 3 are functional. Some of the issues reported include having taps that do not work, spoilt sewage systems, walls with leaking roofs especially when it rains, doors are either damaged or do not open as they are supposed to and lights do not work. Nonetheless, these problems have yet to be addressed, even though numerous written complaints have been submitted. Additionally, word has it that the hostel doctor is inept; he only treats all sorts of diseases with paracetamol, and, as a result, students cannot be sure that they will receive appropriate medical assistance in emergencies.

Students also complained that school authorities conceal the poor state of affairs from higher authorities during an inspection. The students alleged that; The officials who come and visit only two or thrice a year are whisked away immediately after they have been offered tea, without having a feel of the real situation. When students try to come out with their problems, they are also required to write complaints and these are never entertained. The students had earlier conducted a protest at the principal’s office but they were told in the process they would be transferred.
