The Supreme Court will today consider the suo motu petition regarding the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G.Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The West Bengal government’s senior advocate, Kapil Sibal, urged the court to stop the live proceedings during the September 17 hearing, citing threats of acid attacks and rape against the female lawyers present. Sibal was reassured by the Supreme Court that if there were any threats made against attorneys or other parties involved in the case, the court would act.
Junior doctors have been protesting the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, however they haven’t seen any progress toward their demands despite the Chief Secretary’s directives.
“Our agitation so far centred around only one agenda, and that was justice for Abhaya. It has been 10 days since we met with the Chief Secretary concerning our safety and security in hospitals, but we haven’t seen any action on the directives given by the Chief Secretary as per our demands,” Aniket Mahato, a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, told reporters.
The Supreme Court described the doctor’s rape and murder “horrific” on August 20. It mandated the establishment of a 10-member National Task Force to develop guidelines for the security and safety of medical personnel. On August 9, the doctor’s body, which had numerous injuries, was found in the hospital’s chest department seminar hall.
