Many areas in Bihar are still under a critical flood situation on Monday as rainfall intensifies and water levels in many of the state’s rivers rise. The Kosi and Bagmati rivers are flooded, especially in the part of Darbhanga and Sitamarhi districts. In the last few days, the levels of rivers across the state have risen, and as a consequence, the government has released flood advisories.

The Kosi River is reported to have breached its banks at the Kartarpur block and inundated Kirtarpur and Ghanshyampur in the Darbhanga district. Further, seepage has been observed from the embankment of the Bagmati River in the Runni Saidpur block. All the same, Bihar’s water resources minister, Vijay Kumar Choudhary, addressed the residents and stated that the situation was still stable and there was no need to panic. “To date, different regions of the state have been exposed to six cases of embankment breaches.” Among them, some have been rehabilitated while work is still in progress in other facilities,” he said. Choudhary also noted that water spilling over the embankments was reported in Valmikinagar and Kiratpur, while streams in several rivers have started declining.

Fortunately, no loss of life has been claimed due to the floods. However, the influence has not been slight; there are in excess of 1.6 million people who have been put in different states of inconvenience. The power supply has also been affected by floods; flood water ingressed into the Katra Bakuchi power grid at Muzaffarpur, leaving about 45 thousand households without electricity. Authorities also said that repair of the affected stations could begin after water levels drop with the aim of resurrecting power.

The districts severely impacted by the flooding include West and East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Patna, Jehanabad, Madhubani, Araria, Purnea, Katihar and Bhojpur which explains why the flooding is such a crisis in Bihar. Relief work will intensify in the next few days as authorities watch the situation.
