September 27th marks World Tourism Day, an annual celebration dedicated to promoting tourism and its contribution to the global economy, culture, and understanding. The day was established by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1980 to raise awareness about the importance of tourism and its potential to foster peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.

In India, the direct contribution from tourism and hospitality in GDP is approximately $231 billion. According to the global tourism body’s latest research, the sector’s contribution to India’s GDP reached just over INR 19.13TN in 2023 – almost 10% ahead of 2019 levels. Employment in Travel & Tourism grew by 10% to reach just under 43MN, 8% more than in 2019.

Each year, World Tourism Day focuses on a specific theme that highlights different aspects of the tourism industry. The chosen theme serves as a platform for discussions, initiatives, and events that aim to promote responsible and sustainable tourism practices.

Tourism plays a crucial role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and supporting local communities around the world. It fosters cultural exchange, promotes understanding between different cultures, and helps preserve heritage sites. Additionally, tourism can contribute to environmental conservation and sustainable development by promoting responsible practices and supporting local communities.

To celebrate the Day, various events and activities are organized worldwide. These may include travel fairs, exhibitions, cultural performances, and educational workshops. Governments, tourism organizations, and private businesses often come together to promote tourism destinations, highlight the benefits of travel, and encourage responsible tourism practices.

In recent years, the tourism industry has faced significant challenges due to global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the world recovers, there is a renewed focus on the importance of tourism and its potential to contribute to economic recovery and sustainable development. World Tourism Day serves as a reminder of the positive impact that tourism can have on our lives and the world around us.
