Police have detained six people in connection with the social unrest that occurred in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada region on Monday amid the stone-throwing occurrences targeting two religious structures. The violence occurred late Sunday night in Katipalla town, which saw some people throw stones at the Majeedulla Huda Juma Masjid of the town’s 3rd Block. As per the police, a few unknown people came on motorbikes and started throwing stones at the mosque and creating unrest inside the area.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal said six people have been arrested for accused of pelting stones at a mosque in Katipalla outskirts of Mangaluru city, all named as Bharath Shetty, Chennappa, Nithin, Sujith Shetty, Annappa, Preetham Shetty. A case has been lodged, and the investigation continues to unearth the rest of the story.
Post violence, people of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal protested in Dakshina Kannada over a social media post which caused controversy. This led to a conflict with the police force; however, due to the help of the authorities, the situation was brought under control, and no further action was taken.
It took the intervention of the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, Mullai Muhilan, to restore order by having 48 48-hour ban on the sale of alcohol within the Bantwal Town Municipal Council. Muhilan said, “This is to avoid any more incidence, all bars and liquor stores in the area will be closed for the next 2 days due to the ban on sale of alcohol. ”
In a similar situation, Karnataka minister and Congress leader MC Sudhakar have commented that Mangaluru has always been a place which has seen tensions between two communities.
