On Friday, China stated that Chinese forces had pulled back from the edge of a narrow strip of territory in four areas of eastern Ladakh including the Galwan Valley. The overall situation of the border between India and China is comparatively stable and controllable now, according to the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning. This comes after a meeting between the Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in St. Petersburg in a bid to restore friendly relations between the two neighbours.

During the conversation, the two countries recalled the work on border matters and stressed the importance of implementing the results of the negotiations between the leaders. Mao said, “The two parties decided to strengthen mutual understanding and trust, explore ways to improve the bilateral relations and keep in touch for this purpose. ”

When asked about the possibility of the resumption of the all-but-stalled bilateral process of annual military and diplomatic talks to revive the all-but-stagnant process of warming, Mao acknowledged that both Beijing and New Delhi had achieved disengagement in four places along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) located in the western sector of the China-India border. She said, “China-India border issue is still quite tension and for the most part, it is manageable. ”

These comments came shortly after Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that it is estimated that about 75 percent of the ‘disengagement issues’ have been dealt with in the border dispute with China. However, he quickly pointed out that there is still considerable concern about the progressive militarization of the frontier area. During a forum hosted at a Geneva-based think tank, Jaishankar recalled that the recent fight in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 has changed the overall dynamics of Indian-Chinese relations. He continued, “You cannot have violence on the border and then turn around and claim the rest of the relationship is shielded. ”

Suppose the two countries are to bring their relations to normalcy. In that case, the major emphasis will most probably be on sustaining their talks and ensuring that no skirmishes or fights break out between them on the disputed border.
