Kolkata: The West Bengal government has served show cause notices to several government-aided schools after it was claimed that students and teachers were involved in protests during school time. These protest movements are the aftermath of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The schools include the schools of Howrah, Bankura, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore, which have been requested to explain their participation in the rally held on 23rd of August 2024 within 24 hours.

The schools that received these notices include Baluhati High School, Baluhati Girls’ High School, and Bantra Rajlakshmi Girls’ School in Howrah. It had sent out a notice to such institutions expressing its worry over the safety of students and the violation of their rights where school-going children are allowed to participate in such rallies during school time. The government has threatened to take tough measures against the schools if they do not offer proper accounts.

In response, one of the teachers of one of the schools in Howrah strongly denied the accusation, saying that the rally was held after school hours and was not sponsored by the school but was a student and teachers’ initiative, with the participation of alumni.

The brutal gang rape and subsequent murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month has left people-right-minded Indian citizens- incensed across the length and breadth of the country. People, Non-Governmental Organizations, students, and political parties have tried to come out on the streets to protest the victim’s ordeal. In Kolkata on Saturday, people targeting different fields, such as app-cab drivers and different political parties, demonstrated against the incident, and the state Health Department’s meeting with junior doctors also remained ineffective in ending the cease-work.

Subsequent to the CBI taking up the case, several people have been subjected to polygraph examinations, including the former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and others.
