Speaking on the eve of his historic visit to Ukraine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, promised that his country will encourage the peace process in Ukraine as he urged that ‘this is not the time for war; ‘where there is a dispute, the solution is dialogue’. Addressing the Indian community in Warsaw, Poland, on Wednesday, Modi began by talking about India’s new foreign policy doctrine of reaching out to all. This is a far cry from the earlier policy of ostracization.

In his speech, Modi focused on the principles that form the basis of India’s foreign policy, such as respect for the sufferings of others. He said, “Compassion is one of the characteristics of Indians; whenever there is a problem anywhere in a nation, India is the first nation which comes forward to help sustain the global population, food supplying countries after Covid, it was humanity first for India, India helped the world’s citizen, Indian follows the path of Buddha – the path of non-violence.” He again reminded us that this is not the time to fight and highlighted that to conquer the global challenges.

Modi’s comments were made when he planned to visit Kyiv: the trip would be the first ever for an Indian prime minister to Ukraine, which has been an independent state since 1991. On this visit, Modi is likely to talk about how to resolve the current strife using peaceful means with Zelensky. The visit comes six weeks after Modi made a grand visit to Russia that agitated the United States and some of its allies.

Speaking to the Indian community in Poland, Prime Minister Modi appreciated the groups’ work in helping any Indian students stuck in Ukraine due to the conflict in 2022. He also appreciated the Polish government for their warm reception and the withdrawal of the prohibition on visas for Indian students.
