New Delhi: The Supreme Court has formed a National Implementation Task Force to boost the safety features of hospital doctors following the brutal rape and killing of a doctor in Kolkata Hospital. This decision was made during a hearing conducted by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who was fuming over the delay by the West Bengal government and the hospital administration in filing an FIR (First Information Report) over the incident.
Speaking about the severity of the case that brought nationwide protests to life, Chief Justice Chandrachud said the nation cannot afford another such incident. His utterances touched on the severity of the problem and that there is a need for action to be taken. This involvement shows a serious effort of the Supreme Court towards the protection of healthcare workers all across the country.
The bench of JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra expressed displeasure over the functioning of the West Bengal authorities in this context. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta complained about the law and order situation in the state and demanded that the police commissioner of Kolkata be dismissed. He was so passionate about underlining the extent of the trend that he was categorizing it not as an unfortunate accident but as clearly illustrating more pervasive problems.
The court also had some apprehensions over the curbing of protests; there were words of caution against using force on protesters by CJ Chandrachud. The bench expressed its anger over the state’s lack of protection of property rights. It said that the West Bengal government had failed to prevent vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where an angst-ridden mob had vandalized the critical infrastructural installation in the emergency ward.
Also, the Supreme Court discussed problems concerning junior medical doctors, especially working hours and available rest facilities. Medical centers were said to lack simple amenities, including cleanliness and security; in this case, the Chief Justice called for enhancing healthcare facilities to offer the healthcare givers a safe and conducive working environment.
That is why the national task force has been charged with the duties of making key recommendations that transfer policies aimed at addressing these concerns to improve safety standards and working conditions in hospitals.
