On Wednesday, the Union Home Ministry declared that overall, 1037 Police, Fire Services, Home Guards, Civil Defense, CISF and correctional services employees will be conferred gallantry and service medals on Independence Day. They deserve it for their courage and commitment to their work. One of the recipients is Telangana Police Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah, who was awarded this year’s President’s Medal for Gallantry because of his bravery in fighting criminals. The medal is received from President Droupadi Murmu for acts of courage performed in a fierce shoot-out in the year 2022 by Officer Subedar Major Yadaiah.

Ishan Niranjan Neelamnalli and Rahul, involved in chain snatching and arms dealing, were caught by Yadaiah in July 2022 when he was working for the Cyberabad Police Department. In an attempt to prevent the arrest, the criminals attacked Yadaiah, who was stabbed many times in his chest, back and stomach. Yadaiah was critically injured, but he was able to maintain a grip on the attackers until they could be taken into full custody. His determination was clearly seen in his efforts to ensure that the criminals were arrested even as he lay critically injured. Yadaiah was admitted to the hospital for 17 days after the incident.

Apart from Yadaiah from Telangana, 213 personnel will get the Medal of Gallantry (GM) on the eve of Independence Day. These are among 52 medals awarded to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 31 to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, 17 each to Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra Police, 15 to the Chhattisgarh Police and 12 to the Madhya Pradesh Police.

The President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and the Medal for Gallantry (GM) are awarded for conspicuous acts of courage and boldness involving danger to one’s own life, to the life of others or risk to undoing a crime. These honours reward the numerous heroic conducts and personal risks that the officers have under taken on the operation fields.
