Kolkata: FORDA has immediately demanded some stringent actions following the murder of the second-year postgraduate resident doctor in R. G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata. FORDA has formally written a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, as the doctors are pointing out the grievous seizure incident and seeking justice.

The semi-nakèd dead body of the victim, who was a trainèe in the départment of chest mêdicine was found in the seminar hall of the hospitäl on Frìday mornîng. Postmortem examination shows the male doctor was sexually violated before being choked and suffocated. It reveals some of the health complications experienced by the victims, including blood-stained eyes, mouths and private parts, to capture the level of brutality of the crime.

The details of the doctor’s death detailed in FORDA’s letter are about a horrendous incident that includes credible rape, assault, and murder allegations. The federation has expressed dissatisfaction with the existing security in the hospital, admitting that many problematic aspects influenced the tragedy. The letter stresses that protecting healthcare workers must be a priority and calls for bias-free, comprehensive, and immediate investigations into the crime.

The letter also demands that legal consequences be taken against the criminals and those who should have protected the Hospital. FORDA has emphasized the need to enhance security measures in most healthcare facilities to avoid such incidences in future.

Besides urging the government to provide justice to the deceased doctor, the other doctors have given the government a one-month ultimatum within which to act; otherwise, the group will organize a shutdown across the entire country. The federation’s position reflects the healthcare staff’s rising concern and anger regarding their vulnerability and the systemic processes that must be implemented to safeguard them in the workplace.
