New Delhi: The Center on Thursday introduced Waqf (Amendment) Bill for more centralised control of Islamic endowments. Even as opposition opposed the move, the proposed law was referred to a joint parliamentary panel for further security.
Congress-led Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance, and parties such as Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Samajwadi Party (SP), and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) have criticised the proposed amendments including for inclusion of non-Muslims in waqf governance saying they will encroach on the religious rights.
SP leader Akhilesh Yadav claimed the bill was a part of well-planned politics. “When other religious boards do not have non-believers, why non-Muslims should be included in waqf boards? The reality is BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] has brought this bill for its few hardline supporters who are frustrated.”
“All these amendments by the ‘Waqf Board’ are just an excuse Selling land like defence, railway and Nazul land is the target Waqf Board lands are just another link in the chain of ‘schemes for the benefit of BJP’ after Defence land, Railway land and Nazul land. Why doesn’t BJP openly write: ‘Issued in the interest of BJP’, wrote the SP chief in a tweet.
