New Delhi: This story is set on Wednesday, the thirteenth day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where speculations prevail over the introduction of several important bills. The current session commenced on July 22 and is set to end on August 12 unless a sine die is called. The outgoing year has generated a great deal of discussion concerning one of the most prominent figures of the future legislative activity – the bill to amend the Waqf Act.
Though there has not been an official announcement regarding the possible period and positively that the government is going to introduce this bill in this session, according to some press reports, the government has okayed around 40 changes to the Waqf Act. On Tuesday night, the Lok Sabha script put the bill to amend the Waqf Act up for consideration as the house proceeds to introduce the bill.
It is believed that the proposed amendments in the Waqf Act will bring lots of changes to the legislation, particularly the renaming of the act. The existing “Waqf Act” of 1995 has to take a new name, namely The “Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995”. These changes are expected to bring more significant changes and amendments, such as the participation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in the management of the Waqf institution and management.
The Houses of the Bill touches upon numerous issues related to the management system of the Waqf, its development, and its inclusiveness. This legislative change is one of the many reforms the government is undertaking to reposition the “Waqf” administration in line with the current generation’s needs and demands for better management of “Waqf” endowments.
While the Monsoon Session of Parliament ensues, the prospective passing of the Waqf Act amendment bill garnered significant attention so there are expectations that members and stakeholders are waiting for the next developments on the Bill.
