Bengaluru: To decongest traffic, Bengaluru traffic police have introduced new restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) on Saturdays since the last week of August. These new regulations will eliminate the supply and HGVs’ operations between 10 am and 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm and 9 pm, as a news agency stated.

This action was taken after a critical traffic study was carried out from January 1st to June 30th of the current year. The study established that traffic congestion is relative to the day of the week, and weekdays have more traffic congestion than weekends. The congestion tends to be worse during business hours of 7 am to 12 pm from Monday to Friday, and the congestion distance is between 60 and 67 Km. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday are the worst affected. On the other hand, Saturday unveils the biggest congestion by 1:00 P.M. in the evening, with average congestion extended to 70.3 km.

From Saturday’s traffic congestion, MN Anucheth of Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) categorized the statuses as follows: moderate from 11 am to 2:30 pm and high from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Therefore, new restrictions have been adopted to reduce such congestion during these hours, enhance traffic flow during normal working days, and ease the drop in the city’s traffic systems.

At the same time, the current restrictions related to weekdays will still remain in force, although the newly introduced limitations concern on Saturday only. As of now, HGVs are banned from vehicular movement between 7:00 am to 11:00 am and then from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm on weekdays. This approach of maintaining the restrictions on weekdays and changing Saturdays’ time also helps manage the traffic flow of heavy vehicles required for their operation.

The traffic police expect that these changes will contribute to considerable enhancements of the traffic organization in the city, especially during rush hour. The regulation is expected to positively ease congestion and indirectly improve overall road safety, much to the benefit of consumers.
