New Delhi: Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has declared that in memory of the unfortunate Martyrdom of three young students on July 27 MCD shall open four new libraries. The new libraries will be named after the deceased students and will be set up in areas with high student populations: Rajendra Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Ber Sarai.
Delhi Mayor Vijaylakshmi Oberoi gave a commitment through the press release to set up four libraries in mourning of the lost students; this she said, “although nothing can compensate the loss Delhi feels, we shall ensure public reading area for students is improved. ” This sentinel comes at the backdrop of increasing need for such areas as the city grows more involved in the coaching business hence more libraries and reading rooms.
The horrific incidence that took place was when three students choked to death in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajendra Nagar. The basement, which housed a library-cum-study room, to which students were allowed to tread illegally, started to flood at 6. 45 pm when a car hit the sliding gate of the institute, from inside which some members were work- ing at the time of the mishap. In just a few minutes it filled with water and caused the sad outcome of those individuals in the basement. It they have raised questions on the safety of such facilities as well as the legal issues accompanying their operations.
After the dreadful incident, now the MCD has initiated a large sealing campaign to check the illegitimate running of coaching classes and libraries in basements. Five days ago the MCD has sealed over sixty such units. In the next phase began on Thursday, the civic body has sealed the basements of 34 unauthorised coaching centres in the West, Central and Najafgarh zones of the city.
