Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Youth Congress today staged state-level ‘Burn Electricity Bills’ today, demanding action from the state government over the recent electricity tariff charges increment coupled with the use of smart meters. It was actively conducted under the supervision of the state president, Akash Sharma and across the different assembly constituencies. In Raipur, it was about the electricity office at Budha Talab, where protesting activists demanded the rollback of rising electricity tariffs.

Congress Protest

In Raipur, under the leadership of Akash Sharma, Youth Congress workers staged protests against the increasing electricity tariffs and smart metering project. The activists marched and sang loudly, calling for a decrease in the electrical tariffs, and accused the BJP government and Vishnu Dev Sai, the Chief Minister. The protestors also laid stokes on the office interior, burned their electricity bills, and later presented ashes to the officials. People also placed ash in the envelopes and entrusted it to government representatives to deliver to Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, who requested to reduce the rates.

Akash Sharma spoke ill of the BJP government for having hiked the electricity bills, thus extending much misery to the raw populace of Chhattisgarh. He mentioned that in the preceding Congress-led regime of the UPA, there used to be a beneficial ‘Half Half’ policy regarding electricity bills. Nevertheless, the charges demanded by the current BJP-led government are much higher, and some households are paying between ₹4,000 and ₹5,000, while earlier the charges were ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. Sharma said it may be frustrating and said that this aspect has upset the people a lot and to respond to these concerns, the Youth Congress is demonstrating in all the 90 assembly constituencies.

Future Plans

Sharma said today’s protest will be followed by a series of protests. The Youth Congress needs to maintain its demonstrations and even increase the level of the protest activity if needed.
