Pune: Amidst intense downpours and continuous overnight rain in Pune on Thursday, four people died in rain-related incidents. Pune experienced water intrusion in multiple residential areas, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for the city. Due to the city’s excessive rain and flooding, District Collector Suhas Diwase has ordered that schools should be closed.
Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde said he had spoken with officers to alert the Indian Air Force and Army for flood relief operations in Pune and other areas. He said that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is now coordinating with officers while camping in Mantralaya.
According to the media, out of the four, three died from electrocution in the water at Pulachi Wadi in the Deccan Gymkhana region, and one died in a landslide in Adarwadi village in Maval tehsil caused by rainfall.
According to IMD’s prediction, the city is expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas in the ghat areas and moderate rains in the plains through Friday. According to IMD, the Pune district saw 567.2 mm of rain between June 1 and July 24, 2024.
