Bhopal: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the probe into activities disturbing the wildlife balance in the tiger sub-zone in Bhopal’s Chandanpura-Mendora region in Madhya Pradesh. The NGT has constituted an expert committee of five members given apprehensions regarding the ecological pullulation in this region. The said committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, the Environment Department, CPCB, and the Madhya Pradesh PCBs, which has to physically study the area and present a realistic first-hand report in one and half months.

As for its functions, the committee is also authorized to inspect all the territory within the tiger’s territory to define the activities that destabilize the ecosystems. The NGT’s decision stems from the recent growing uproar over commercialization issues by either governmental organizations or owners of the land in the region. Some of these activities are land plotting, interference with the natural water flow, and fragmentation of wildlife movement thus negatively affecting the ecosystem and that of tigers.

Noting the gravity of the problem, the NGT has directed notices to the respondents asking them to come up with their arguments on the matter. This implies the vigor of the tribunal to help in managing the environmental issues in the Chandanpura-Mendora tiger zone.

What has made the issue all the more pressing, though is a report submitted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2018, where the Chandanpura region was said to be a tiger breeding zone. This status increases the guard and protection that needs to be provided to the species and its habitat. The coming out of the NGT is considered a giant step in the protection of this productive region.

The apprehensions that the NGT has pointed out include the effect that a local university poses to the tiger zone. The tribunal has realized that the existence of the university has affected the area due to hindering the flow of tigers.
